Sprinkler Requirements in California

The California Building Standards Commission approved the State Fire Marshal's Building, Fire, and Residential Code adoption packages for the 2010 California Building Standards Codes at a 2010 hearing. A key component of the code adoption, which took effect on January 1, 2011, is the sprinklering of all new one-and two-family dwellings and townhouse construction statewide. Prior to the adoption, more than 150 jurisdictions in California had a local residential fire sprinkler ordinance. For more information, visit California's Office of the State Fire Marshal site.

Living in a Home With Fire Sprinklers?

Many homes in California are now equipped with life-saving fire sprinklers. The coalition wants to make sure homeowners understand and properly maintain this technology so that it works properly if ever needed. This informational sheet offers information on home fire sprinklers and links for more information. We hope that builders, realtors, escrow agents, and homeowner associations will share this information to home buyers and home owners.

Interested in delivering a presentation on home fire sprinklers to realtors or homeowner associations? The coalition has produced this PowerPoint presentation, which includes speaker notes.
